Renewable energy technologies
Photovoltaic systems and other renewable energy technologies work on a similar principle. Through chemical or physical processes, energy that is already there is transformed into electric energy. This electric energy is then processed and made available in a standardized form (see diagram on page 6). The electricity generated by such a system, however, must be used immediately, at the same time that it is generated. And that is why there is the need for a storage medium which can hold energy when there is no immediate consumption. Where electricity is fed into the grid, the utility company will take on this task by constantly readjusting the inflow of energy produced by third parties along with the fluctuation in overall energy demand. Such systems basically require two interconnected subsystems: the power system, which makes the energy generated available in a grid-compliant form, and the control system, which ensures – and monitors – the reliable and safe operation under power.
